‘ Jolly Jack’ Marshall’ s playing career was cut short by injury but he chose to stay in football and had coaching spells with Bury, Stoke City and indeed Wednesday, before becoming the manager at Rochdale in 1958, following Catterick’ s move to Hillsborough. In 1960 he took over as manager of Blackburn Rovers, where he stayed for almost seven years. He was managing Blackburn when Alan Brown’ s Wednesday team beat them, on their way to the 1966 Cup final. A year later Brown appointed him as his assistant at Hillsborough.

Four months after his appointment, Brown surprisingly resigned to manage Sunderland for a second time. Marshall was hurriedly named as his successor on a one year contract. In his only full season 1968-69, there was a memorable 5-4 victory over Manchester United’ s European Cup winning team and a splendid FA Cup win ove Revie’ s Leeds United side. In the league Wednesday won only one of their last 19 games and Marshall’ s contract was not renewed.
